Posted: 21st September 2021

Veritable Michael, an opera project by the composer Tom Floyd and Shadow Opera has been chosen to receive the Stephen Oliver Award 2021.  An insight into the true story of two Victorian poets and lovers who lived and wrote under the pseudonym, Michael Field. Tom Floyd is working with Shadow Opera to record the opera as a podcast to be released in episodes this autumn.  The podcast opera combines the journals, poetry and letters of Katherine Bradley and Edith Cooper with Tom’s score, and “explores the sensual, fantastical and witty world of Michael Field, and his struggle with Victorian patriarchy”.

The Stephen Oliver Award will then be used to help cover the costs of bringing the opera to a live production which is currently scheduled to take place at the Barber Institute in Birmingham in September of next year.  More information about the project can be found at https://www.tom-floyd.com/productions/veritable-michael
