Whilst in lockdown, the saxophonist Emma McPhilemy has embarked on an exciting project called #lockthesaxdown in partnership with the composer Jenni Watson. Emma decided to release a weekly demo video of one of Jenni’s pieces together with a backing track online.  This online practical tool has enabled Emma to reach saxophonists all over the world during a time when rehearsal with other musicians is increasingly difficult.  In addition, Emma has now started an ‘online challenge series’ providing a demo video, 1-minute sheet music and backing track available to download for free. Players are then encouraged to upload their 1-minute performance of the extract to social media, and use the hashtag #lockthesaxdown. The project has become very popular over the last few months, with 10 demo releases so far, over 100 video uploads and 100,ooo video views in 13 different countries. Emma is hugely passionate about this project “after seeing an amazing response to the project, Jenni and I have decided to launch a Kickstarter Campaign, to turn all of these demo releases (and more) into a highly artistic album, recorded and produced professionally…so far we have raised almost £600 and 23 backers.  Our target is £3,500″.
