Stephen Oliver, a brilliant young composer, died tragically early, leaving a sum of money for the express purpose of encouraging the promotion and performance of contemporary opera and chamber works for the stage and of providing support for individuals connected with the practice of contemporary opera, or seeking such training or education. The Trust set up in his name used to be administered independently but it has been agreed that in future the award should be incorporated within the Countess of Munster Musical Trust.

The Stephen Oliver award is open to young composers under the age of 30 as at 1st September of the year in which the application is made (next award 2013)

The award is made biennually for a work, which has been or is in the process of being written for music theatre, to assist with the cost of bringing it to performance. Applicants should be able to demonstrate that performance is in prospect.

In the first instance, applicants should apply in writing to the Secretary from January 2013.
