Instrument Purchase & Loan Schemes
Students should consult
literature produced by the individual funding organisations for complete
and up-to-date information & for relevant application forms.
ABBADO EUROPEAN YOUNG MUSICIANS
TRUST
Intended to help those, normally under 30, aiming for a professional career
in music. Assistance (usually interest free loans) for young musicians
to help buy suitable instruments, mainly strings, woodwind and brass.
Loans are normally to be repaid within a five-year term. Applications
considered every three months.

THE TOM ACTON MEMORIAL TRUST
The trust supports young musicans from Essex (born, educated or resident)
aged 25 or under with financial help for instruments, tuition, and other
expenses. Select based on talent, and require an application supported
by a teacher’s recommendation. Awards will be made of variable amounts
according to need, up to a maximum of £750.

ARTS COUNCIL FOR NORTHERN IRELAND
Milton Violin Award - The loan of the Arts
Councils Gagliano violin is offered to outstanding violin students
from Northern Ireland for up to 3 years. Award made by audition. Deadline
April.

LAWRENCE ATWELL'S CHARITY
The Charity is aimed at young people who come from a low-income
background.Grants made towards cost of musical instrument
for postgraduate students only. Applicants must be British or refugees
who have indefinite leave to remain in the UK, aged 16-26. Parental income
cap £25,000 pa with an additional £2750 for each dependent
child under the age of 18.

FELICITY BELFIELD MUSIC TRUST
To enable students to have an
instrument worthy of their talents. Instruments (mainly woodwind) loaned to
students up to age 21, until they are 25, when they must be returned or
purchased. Sometimes assistance provided towards fees or extra courses. Most
students recommended by teacher, have to prove exceptional ability and need.
Those from West County have priority. No audition fee.

BENSLOW MUSICAL INSTRUMENT LOAN SCHEME
Mainly orchestral stringed
instruments lent to promising young musical students whose development is
hampered by inability to afford instrument of appropriate quality. Applications
invited from young musicians of any age, from primary school to advanced study.
Borrowers selected on basis of musical promise and financial need. In most
cases instruments lent for an initial period of 3 years or until the end of a
recognised course of study. No entry fee.

LOAN FUND FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
Assistance with instrument
purchase by loans, at nominal rates of interest, repayable over max. period of
5 years. Because of funds limited resources, assistance restricted to
those who have already started professional careers. Preference is given to
British nationals. Not available to children of school age or students in early
stages of training.

MBF MUSIC EDUCATION AWARDS
Myra Hess Trust - Assistance towards
instrument purchase (piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass). Open to
postgraduate students of any nationality. Age range 20-27. Preference given to
those aiming to enter upon professional careers as soloists. Closing date May.

ROYAL PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY
Sir John Barbirolli Memorial Foundation - Grants to registered students
towards cost of purchasing better quality instruments (except keyboard).
Applications considered from students normally completing first year,
but some juniors about to start full-time course of study also considered,
where progress impeded by poor quality instrument. Closing date 31st May.
Applications must be supported by students teacher and head of department.
